You have verified your identity, received a personal code and ticked the job off your list. But have you checked which company roles still need that code? For a busy company owner, this is an easy administrative gap to leave behind.
As the Companies House transition continues, use a role-by-role check rather than treating a headline date as your own deadline. This practical routine helps you organise the next steps without confusing identity verification with the filings that connect it to your appointments.
Start with a list of your roles
Write down each company you are involved with, its company number and whether you are recorded as a director, a person with significant control (PSC), or both. If you manage several companies, use a separate row for each appointment. Do not assume that completing one company's paperwork covers every other company.
Keep the list factual: role, relevant date, responsible filer and completion evidence. There is no need to put your personal code in a widely shared task list. Store it securely and share it only with people you trust to file on your behalf.
Find the date that applies to that role
For existing directors, Companies House requires the personal code with the company's next confirmation statement. A director with several companies needs to address each one. Check your company's record and your filing arrangements now, leaving time to resolve questions before the filing is due.
PSCs have a separate 14-day period. The dates depend on the circumstances, and the Companies House register shows the relevant period. For someone who is both director and PSC of the same company, the PSC period starts the day after the confirmation statement date; filing the statement early does not move that period.
These details matter more than a reminder that simply says “November deadline”. Check Companies House's current timing guidance for your particular position.
Separate verification from the remaining paperwork
Successfully proving your identity gives you a Companies House personal code. The next task is to ensure the required details are provided for each relevant role. A director who is also a PSC must provide the code separately for those two roles, using the appropriate filing or service.
If an accountant or company administrator handles your filings, ask a specific question: “Which roles have been completed, which dates are still outstanding, and what evidence will you send me?” A clear answer is more useful than a general assurance that identity checks have been done.
Use a simple completion record
Make four columns: role, due date, person handling the action and evidence received. Put reminders ahead of the relevant dates. After an action is completed, record the confirmation and check that any separate PSC step has not been missed. Avoid saving identity documents in ordinary marketing or shared planning folders.
Ignoring the requirements can have real consequences. Companies House warns that a company cannot file its confirmation statement unless all its directors are verified, and continued non-compliance can lead to enforcement. For the current rules and verification routes, use the official identity verification guide. Direct verification through GOV.UK One Login is free; buying a book is optional.
