Age Bias Is Real

Research consistently shows that job seekers over 50 face significant age bias in hiring — longer job searches, lower callback rates, and offers below their previous salary level. This is illegal in both the UK (Equality Act 2010) and the US (Age Discrimination in Employment Act) — but it's difficult to prove and pervasive in practice.

How It Manifests

Age bias in hiring rarely takes the form of explicit discrimination. It manifests as: CVs not progressing past automated screening, interview feedback that references "culture fit" or "energy", roles being filled by significantly younger candidates with less experience, and salary offers that don't reflect the candidate's experience level.

Strategies That Help

Modernise your CV. Remove graduation dates if they're more than 20 years ago. Focus on the last 15 years. Use a clean, modern format. Lead with a strong professional summary that emphasises current relevance.

Update your digital presence. A strong, current LinkedIn profile with a professional photo, recent activity, and recommendations from recent colleagues significantly improves your visibility and credibility.

Emphasise adaptability. Demonstrate comfort with current technology, recent learning, and the ability to work effectively with younger colleagues and managers. Specific examples are more convincing than general claims.

Target the right employers. Some organisations actively value experience and have strong track records of hiring and retaining over-50 employees. Research before you apply.

Use your network. A referral from someone inside an organisation bypasses the initial screening process that is most susceptible to age bias. Your network — built over decades — is your most powerful job search tool.
